Imagining a new professional tool

Goal

Romande Energie is a key player in the energy transition in French-speaking Switzerland. With multiple sites and activities across various domains, the company relies on digital tools to optimize operations and ensure efficient service for its customers.

In this context, I had the opportunity to collaborate with their teams on a UX research project. The goal was to identify the needs of field employees and guide the choice of a future solution. This project was part of replacing a tool used by more than 200 employees.

Approach

For eight months, I worked closely with the teams. To ensure effective collaboration, I set up a rigorous follow-up process with weekly stand-up meetings, allowing for smooth communication, real-time feedback, and constant alignment with stakeholders.

Scoping and understanding the context

For eight months, I worked closely with the teams. To ensure effective collaboration, I set up a rigorous follow-up process with weekly stand-up meetings, allowing for smooth communication, real-time feedback, and constant alignment with stakeholders.

The project was carried out in a hybrid format, with regular visits to the sites in Morges, Noville, Yverdon, and Rolle.

Planning

User research

During the first phase, my priority was to understand the challenges, clarify the research objectives, and establish a structured plan.

Close collaboration with Romande Energie, through regular check-ins and follow-ups, ensured constant alignment. This open communication allowed us to refine our approach and design a research strategy tailored to the project’s specific needs.

The research phase combined several complementary methods to gather in-depth insights.

Individual interviews helped uncover the needs, frustrations, and expectations of field teams. In parallel, focus groups were organized to compare perspectives, generate ideas, and build consensus on common or specific needs. Finally, co-design workshops directly involved users in exploring solutions tailored to their real-life practices.

Thanks to this structured approach, I was able to map workflows, identify major pain points, and define the key features for the future solution.

The results were then synthesized into a presentation. Special care was taken to ensure clarity and accessibility, so the content could be easily understood by people who had not participated directly in the study.

I delivered a clear and structured report that could be reused internally by the teams even after the end of the mission.

These results then served as the foundation for drafting a requirements document. To build this deliverable, several steps were necessary: defining key sections, validating needs and features with each department, and drafting a Word document.

Features were prioritized using the KANO method. To make the requirements easier to consult, I also created an Excel version, allowing for quick reading and more efficient navigation of key information.

This approach provided Romande Energie with a clear and well-structured vision to support the choice of their future digital solution.
